Shoo

This week in St. Wolstans, we have "Walk in My Shoes". Adam Clayton from U2 sent our school a letter asking us to take part in the event in aid of World Mental Health Day. Everyone in the school wore no uniform and a funky pair of shoes and brought in 2 to support St. Patrick’s University Hospital.

If left untreated, mental health problems can cause lifelong disability and suffering, and have a major impact on personal development, education, work and physical health. 1 in 4 young people in Ireland will experience a mental health difficulty.

Suicide is the leading cause of death among 18-25 year old men in Ireland and the second most common cause of death generally in this age group.

Ireland has one of the highest suicide rates in the 14-24 age group in the EU.
75% of all mental health difficulties begin before 24 years of age.
1 in 6 employees in Ireland will experience a mental health difficulty.

Many of the problems associated with mental illness – including suicide – are preventable with early clinical intervention.

Between 45% and 65% suffer from treatable mental illnesses such as depression or psychosis. Early intervention in these conditions can stop deterioration, aid recovery, and prevent relapse, giving young adults real hope in returning to a normal life.

This is why our school decided to take part in the event, so people suffering will have some help and are saying shoo to negative thoughts.

Anti-Bullying Week 2014

This week in St. Wolstans it was Anti-Bullying week. This is a very important week in our school as we do our best to stomp out bullying and make sure everyone is included in every school activity.

On Tuesday the 30th of September we had an cyber-bullying workshop. I really enjoyed it because Kevin, the man who spoke to us didn't blame bullying on the social media websites and blamed it on the people behind the computer screens.

On Thursday the 2nd of October we had our funwalk. The funwalk is an event where every class in the school makes up a dance revolved around the theme of friendship. Each year was assigned a different colour.

First Years - Pink
Second Years - Purple
Third Years - Green
TY - Yellow
Fifth Year - Blue
Sixth Year - Black and white

Our Class did a dance to Once Upon a Dream by Lana Del Rey and Wake Me Up Before You Go GO by Wham. In the end, our class won!

It was a great week for learning and having fun with my peers.

Workshops Workshops Workshops...

Our First whole week of TY is coming to a close. This week, we met most of our teachers and took part in three workshops. Our workshops were called Etiquette, First Aid and Positive Parties.

Etiquette taught us that a lady should be gracious as she offers a firm handshake and competes for whatever job she wants. It taught us how to be confident in high heeled shoes and have perfect posture.

In The first Aid course we were taught how to apply bandages on various body parts such as the wrist and the ankles. We were shown how to act in a situation of heart attacks and seizures as well as learning how to put somebody in the recovery position if they faint.

Positive Parties was my favourite workshop. The speaker had sweets such as drumsticks and love hearts on all the desks and hula necklaces on the backs of the chairs. She had balloons all over the floor and played us music. Near the end of the workshop, we did some laughing yoga and it was hilarious!
